In view of Chinese interests in the development of coal and iron in Canton province, there is little chance of success in that direction without co-operation with influential Chinese, The said develop ent is interesting several British Companies, but before support om be afforded to any Syndicato, I must be notified of the specific areas in which prospection is desired, China is in a most unsettled condition, the provinces in a state of political and administrative chees, thus His Majesty's Consul-General at Canton does not advise any great outlay of capital at present, nor does he considor agreements could be concluded with the Country in its present stato.
In my despatch of July 11th and 1st paragraph thereof I nontioned a certain syndicate, I now report that no concrete progress has been made by them, tho' they expect to define
areas shortly,
